My first memory of attempting to diet was when I was 11. I was at sleepaway camp and my friend was trying to lose weight. I decided to join her because I had always noticed my stomach was bigger than my friends. I went home at the end of the summer, not having lost any weight, and was able to put the whole thing out of my head. Unfortunately, the next summer when I went back, the dieting started again. This time we restricted ourselves more and I realized that the act of restricting gave me a sense of control that I had never felt before.
